Xbox One v PS4

It’s been a hot topic for a while now, with the ever expanding rumour pool for the Nintendo NX, which will be the successor to the Wii U

, and for many, Nintendo’s return to fame, and the rumoured Playstation 4K, or 4.5, which will be a hardware update for the existing console.

A more concrete expectation has possibly been set, according to GameSpot, with GameStop COO, Tony Bartell, revealing the following at the retail chain’s Investor Day Briefings:

“Although we have not modelled extensive growth for new innovation in this presentation, we are very pleased to see the introduction of technology like virtual reality and rumoured new console launches, some of which seem imminent.”

These comments seem timely with the existing rumours circulating about Nintendo’s new console and Sony’s planned hardware update for the PlayStation 4

. This, coupled with the upcoming E3 event which will take place between 14th and 16th June 2016, could mean that confirmation could be coming sooner than anticipated.

The idea of fancy new technology seems nice, although a lot of late adopters for the PlayStation 4 might not like the idea of their new console being obsolete by what could potentially be this time next year. The last console generation lasted for around eight years, and with the current PlayStation 4 console having only launched in 2013, many would expect the current hardware to have a lot of life left in it.

On the other hand, Nintendo’s new console could not come sooner as the Wii U has not managed to gain the appeal of either the casual gamers or the traditional Nintendo audience, with its hardware criticised as being archaic and the software library sparse.

Bartell was pressed for further information as to what consumers can actually expect at a QA session, but he gave little away, stating that: “as usual, we know more than we can share,” and added that they would be not be commenting any further as these announcements will come directly from the platform holders.
