Now hungry shuffleboard enthusiasts can play the game while drinking expensive whiskey and eating a “messy but delightful” burger at The Hopewell Bar Kitchen, which opened last week in Allston. The Hopewell is owned by the same team that’s behind White Horse Tavern, The Avenue, and The Last Drop, to name a few.
Walk down a small set of stairs to enter the restaurant. The lower-level location, previously home to Shanghai Social Club from the same owners, gives the space a hidden feel. There are not a lot of windows, but the space is bright enough with light wooden tables, banquettes, and accents that give off a warm golden glow. There are several seating options — the banquettes that run along the perimeter of the main dining room and high-top tables that are scattered throughout the center. There are a couple of long, narrow tables that offer a casual space to sip a drink and have a bite. In the center of the room, a long shuffleboard game provides an opportunity to socialize with fellow patrons.
The walls are adorned with blackboards depicting house specials written brightly in chalk. A long bar runs along the right side of the room, offering plenty of seating options and a view at the Hopewell’s impressive collection of fine whiskeys. The back wall has a raised lounge where larger parties can curl up with large leather pillows and take in all the action.
There are two smaller rooms located on either side of the main dining room and bar area. To the right, the room houses three arcade games. To the left, there’s a pool table as well as additional seating for watching the game or just taking a timeout.
The Hopewell is open for dinner during the week and for lunch and dinner on Saturday and Sundays. The restaurant offers a menu that is designed to be shared, featuring grilled pizza, raw bar items, and more.
