The console, which will reportedly boast more power than the Playstation 4 and Xbox One, is yet to be given an official launch date by Nintendo.
It is also believed that the NX will include both a home console and a handheld device after Nintendo apparently released software development kits.
“Nintendo might launch the NX in 2016 because of the softness of 3DS and Wii U”
The Japanese gaming giants are yet to comment on any reports, But Macquarie Capital Securities analyst David Gibson believes that a 2016 release for the highly-anticipated console looks likely.
He told the Wall Street Journal: “We are increasingly of the idea that Nintendo might launch the NX in 2016 because of the softness of 3DS and Wii U.”
The Nintendo 3DS has enjoyed great success following its release in 2011, and has sold well over 53 million units worldwide.
However, the Wii U has shipped just 10 million units despite being released just a year later, and it could be that Nintendo are trying to combine the two in an effort to compete with Sony and Microsoft.
Regardless of the end product, one thing is for certain: enjoying classic Nintendo titles on a powerful machine.
Developers are planning on supporting the NX with a competitive number of games, and Nintendo fans will no doubt be enjoying the likes of Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda with the next-gen power they deserve.
