I didn’t get my 950 yet so I will publish my own review later.
Apparently the Lumia 928 (or any older Windows Phones, for that matter) can’t run Continuum, which is kind of a bummer because that’s really one of the main (if not the main) selling point of Windows 10 Mobile. Continuum certainly won’t kill PCs or tablets, but it’s still a profound shift in computing culture. Just keep in mind that it won’t work with all of the apps installed on your phone.
Plug in to charge: Connecting your latest Lumia phone to the Microsoft Display Dock will also allow it to charge.
Another positive is was how easy it was to put the phone on “One-Handed” use. You’ll also have the choice of connecting via HDMI (with HDCP 1.3/1.4 copy protection) or DVI. Phones are finally acting like computers in a way Apple and Google have barely tried. Plus, you’ll be able to use your phone independently to do something different, for instance, taking a call or sending a text message while you continue to enjoy apps on the bigger screen. However, the look and feel of polycarbonate slightly diminishes the device’s high-end build status since it looks like it is made of plastic. A wireless Bluetooth keyboard and mouse is a must for a less cluttery experience. If you have an app that is not in Windows 10 that will be a deal breaker.
Immediately, I saw the familiar Windows taskbar on my monitor and the Windows Start menu.
The Lumia 930 is smaller and measures 137x71x9.8mm, resulting in a total weight of 167grams, which is convenient, even if the device is quite thick.
Moving apps to a SD card should no longer cause those apps to crash. And it’s seriously impressive how this phone takes to monitors and keyboards. Check out the phones around you and see plenty of cracked screens, a sad condition for an $800 phone. The situation has improved over the past several years, as popular apps like Facebook, Instagram, Uber and more now have a presence in the Windows Store.
Continuum does have its quirks, however. Opening up Instagram Beta and seeing the app’s lack of photo editing sliders is like time traveling back to the 2012 version of the app. It’s depressing.
When using Continuum, expect to see a few apps grayed out. But this is not a phone that is likely to win over new converts.
Performance, on the other hand, is something of a mixed bag. You have thrown icon-memorization out the window.
Microsoft already has a Surface line and devices in it can be used as tablet/laptop hybrids.
Both the phones come with a dedicated camera button and feature triple LED flash.
Problem is, there hasn’t been a Windows Phone for them to upgrade to. So, while you turn your phone into a PC, it will not drain the battery; instead, you will get a charged battery by the time you finish your work. It’s a departure from the app icon grid layout from Android and iOS, which is a refreshing change. Insane enough, it’s actually better than what’s on most Windows laptops.
Earlier, I compared Windows 10 Mobile to diarrhea.
So what happened to Windows Mobile?
From here you can do things like write Word documents, browse the Web via Microsoft’s Edge browser, check your email, and create PowerPoint presentations. UWP applications are coded to run on any Windows 10 device, be it a desktop, laptop, tablet, or phone. Windows 10 Mobile will not take over the world. Maps delivers the essentials: a basic map view with traffic options, a lovely satellite view (without the need to launch a separate app), and local search that integrates with Yelp, including reviews, pictures, and hours of operation. Although Microsoft intends to sell unlocked devices that will work with both T-Mobile and ATT, now only ATT-locked devices are available (including review units).
Unified Skype messaging is pretty neat, too. But in general, Microsoft is still shouldering the load.
