After the release of the rather controversial wasteland workshop DLC, many fallout fans (including myself) were left with a nasty taste in our mouths, but could Far Harbor redeem our interests?

First of all, Far Harbor is set to contain more content than any of the other Fallout 4 DLC’s, with a map size bigger than that of the Dragonborn expansion pack for Skyrim and the shivering Isles expansion for Oblivion.

“A new case from Valentine’s Detective Agency leads you on a search for a young woman and a secret colony of synths. Travel off the coast of Maine to the mysterious island of Far Harbor, where higher levels of radiation have created a more feral world. Navigate through the growing conflict between the synths, the Children of Atom, and the local townspeople. Will you work towards bringing peace to Far Harbor, and at what cost? Far Harbor features the largest landmass for an add-on that we’ve ever created, filled with new faction quests, settlements, lethal creatures and dungeons. Become more powerful with new, higher-level armor and weapons. The choices are all yours.”

This statement from Bethesda is very interesting as it seems as if they are trying to give you the element of choice: “The choices are all yours” which is a big criticism with Fallout 4 as it felt more like an open-world shooter, instead of a rpg. This is extremely good news to hear, as it shows that Bethesda are listening to what the fans want, even though many wanted the element of choice from day one. Furthermore, the introduction of new factions could hopefully lead to very interesting side quests and characters. This is a big feature we need to see as I thought the base game lacked weird and wonderful quests/factions such as the little lamp light in fallout 3. Moreover, with the addition of choices, hopefully picking a certain faction can have a big impact on how characters interact with you and the outcomes of quests and actions.

I would also like to see new companions with unique abilities, perks and background. More background information on the companions would help players connect with them in a more realistic manner, making us actually care about who they are. In addition, new out of the ordinary locations would be something fresh to the formula, encouraging the player to explore every last area of the new map. This would heavily increase the gameplay hours spent on this DLC.

Most significantly, Far Harbor will need to have an engaging story line with interesting characters, lore and a variety of important choices which actually have a big impact on the outcomes.  To conclude, if Bethesda include these feature and follow their words, then I have no doubt that Far Harbor will be a fantastic expansion pack.

Far Harbor is set to be released sometime in May, priced at $24.99, and will be arriving on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
